Our Mission

The Dante Foundation of Nassau County, Inc. was founded December 19, 1984. The organization is composed of 100 men and women of Italian heritage, who have united to encourage fellowship among all Americans of Italian descent; to renew the traditions of the Italian heritage; to generate funds to establish scholarships for outstanding youths of Italian ancestry and to support deserving charitable organizations and causes.

The Dante Foundation is named in honor of DURANTE DEGLI ALIGHIERI, also known simply as DANTE. A towering intellect, he was often called “The Supreme Poet” and is considered the “father” of the Italian language.

Designed to assist deserving students of Italian descent in their pursuit of higher education, the organization’s founding members in 1984 selected its name in honor of a cultural icon whose soaring works and endless pursuit of learning and enlightenment set a timeless standard in the human quest for knowledge and intellectual excellence. Although “Nassau County” is incorporated into the Foundation’s name, it was later expanded to include students of Suffolk County as well.

In its 28 years of existence, the Dante Foundation has awarded nearly $2 million in scholarships and in excess of $300,000 in donations to worthy local charities.
